Salford City have strengthened their goalkeeping options with the signing of Lee Burge. The 33-year-old arrives as a free agent and will wear the number 26 shirt for the Ammies this season.
Burge is a two-time League Two promotion winner and has also lifted the EFL Trophy on two separate occasions. He won his first trophy with Coventry City in the 2016-17 EFL Trophy final, before helping them secure promotion via the play-offs the following season. He added a second EFL Trophy to his collection with Sunderland in the 2020-21 campaign.
Experience added to squad
His most recent club was Northampton Town, where he joined in 2022 and played a part in their third-place finish in his first season. That success gave him three years of experience in League One, a level of know-how Salford will hope to utilise as they look to climb the table from their current 15th position. The club have taken six points from their opening five matches, with their recent form showing two consecutive wins after three straight losses.
The club confirmed the deal in a statement, saying, "We all extend a warm Salford welcome to Lee and his family!" His registration has been completed in time for him to be available for selection this weekend.
Immediate availability
Burge is eligible for Saturday's trip to face Rotherham United in League Two. His arrival provides competition and depth in a key area as manager Peter Cklamovski assesses his squad options. The team's defensive record shows six goals conceded in five league games, so adding an experienced head between the posts is a logical move.
Salford's last outing was a 1-0 home victory over Port Vale, with Josh Powell scoring the decisive goal. They will be aiming to build on that result and their current two-game winning run. The full schedule of upcoming matches is available on the club's fixtures page.
Lee Burge's contract with Salford City is for the 2026-27 season.
