Salford City have released ex-Liverpool star Fabio Borini after missing out on promotion to League One. The Italian forward was one of nine players set to leave the club following their defeat to Notts County in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium. Salford City's failure to earn promotion has led to a mass overhaul of their squad, with planning underway for a fresh assault on the promotion spots next season. Borini made 33 appearances in all competitions for Salford City, scoring five goals. He will now look for another new club at the age of 35. Salford City boss Karl Robinson was full of praise for Borini's efforts with the club, saying he embodies everything the club is trying to do. Borini started his career with Chelsea, making eight senior appearances for the Blues, before going on to represent Swansea, Roma, Liverpool, Sunderland, and AC Milan. Salford City have announced that 13 players are already under contract beyond this summer, while they have agreed new deals with four stars. A further six players have seen their stays with the club extended due to clauses in their contracts. The club's retained and released list was confirmed on Monday, with Borini among those leaving at the end of his deal. Salford City's meteoric rise up through the English football pyramid since the Class of 92's involvement at the Peninsula Stadium has been impressive, but they will remain in the fourth tier for another season. The club's fans will be hoping for a stronger performance next season, with the aim of earning promotion to League One. Salford City's squad overhaul is a significant step towards achieving this goal, with the club looking to bring in new talent to strengthen their team.
