Salford City has appointed Ryan Giggs as their director of football, with the former Manchester United winger taking on the role since the start of the season. Giggs, 50, was quoted in a club statement as their director of football when confirming the appointment of Alex Bruce as an assistant coach last month. The club confirmed that Giggs has been working in that capacity throughout this season. Giggs has not worked in football since he was acquitted of charges that he assaulted his former partner last year. He denied all charges. As a co-owner of Salford City alongside fellow ex-United players Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, and David Beckham, Giggs' appointment is seen as a significant move for the club. Butt, 49, is the League Two side's chief executive, and the rest, aside from Scholes, are directors, according to the club's filings. Giggs' first backroom role came at United, when he was appointed as a player-coach under David Moyes in the summer of 2013. He then took interim charge of the club at the end of that season following Moyes' sacking, overseeing the final four matches of the Premier League campaign. Salford City is currently 20th in League Two, eight points above 22nd-placed Colchester United, who occupy the final relegation spot. Karl Robinson was appointed as their head coach in January, following the sacking of Neil Wood. Giggs had been charged with headbutting former girlfriend Kate Greville when she tried to break off their relationship on November 1, 2020. He was also accused of using controlling and coercive behaviour towards Greville during a three-year period before the night of the alleged violence, and a separate offence of assaulting her younger sister, Emma, in the same incident. Greville had informed the prosecution in May that she no longer wanted to give evidence because she felt worn down and violated by the process before a judge in July issued not-guilty verdicts in the three charges relating to his alleged behaviour. When Giggs stepped down from the Wales job officially in June 2022, he said he intended to return to management at a later date. Salford City's appointment of Giggs as director of football marks his return to the sport. The club's fans will be hoping that Giggs' experience and expertise will help the team avoid relegation and improve their performance in League Two.
