Salford City's 17-year-old striker Will Wright has completed a permanent move to Liverpool. Wright made his first appearance for Salford City in November 2024 during an EFL Trophy match against Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-21s. He went on to play twice in League Two and made a single appearance in the FA Cup earlier this year. A move to Liverpool marks a significant step in Wright’s development, as he enters a Premier League academy environment for the first time. His progression has taken place largely outside the traditional academy system, with much of his football education coming at grassroots and B-team level. Wright caught the attention of several clubs with his prolific goalscoring record for Salford’s youth and ‘B’ teams. He made his senior debut in January in an FA Cup tie against Manchester City and remained part of the first-team picture through the latter half of the season. Earlier in the summer, Arsenal had agreed a fee with Salford to sign the striker, reportedly worth around £200,000 plus add-ons. However, the Gunners were unable to finalise personal terms with the player, opening the door for Liverpool to swoop. Liverpool not only reached an agreement with Salford but also convinced Wright to stay in the north west, a key factor in the final decision. He began training with Liverpool’s Under-21s last week and made his unofficial debut on Saturday, coming off the bench for the final 30 minutes of a 0-0 draw against Hull City at the AXA Training Centre. Wright will now continue his development under the guidance of U21s head coach Rob Page. The move underlines the club’s strategy of recruiting promising young talent and integrating them into their elite pathway system. While first-team opportunities may not come immediately, the switch represents a significant opportunity for Wright to test himself at a higher level and continue developing in a professional environment. Wright's transfer is a significant loss for Salford City, but the club will be hoping to see him succeed at Liverpool. The young striker's departure may also lead to opportunities for other players to step up and make an impact at Salford City. As Wright begins his new journey at Liverpool, Salford City fans will be watching with interest to see how he progresses.
